Veterans Day Parade Needs Funds: Organizers

Volunteers say the parade has only half of the funding it needs.

Organizers of San Diego’s Veterans Day Parade are asking for donations from the public to help cover the cost of this year’s event.

The event planned for Friday, November 11 beginning at 11 a.m. will follow a route along the Embarcadero downtown.

As of Monday, volunteers say the parade has only half of the $100,000 in funding needed to put on the parade they have planned.

The organization had to put out a similar plea in 2012 when funds were not available.

This year, there is a new potential to raise funds with the appearance of the Express Clydesdale team.

There will be more than a dozen tickets up for sale for those people interested in riding in the stagecoach on the day of the parade.

“We’re reaching out, we’re selling tickets, we’re selling merchandise and we’re asking other companies if they’re interested in participating,” said Trisha McKinney.

Jack Harkins, U.S. Marine Corps Retired, who assured the media Monday that the parade would take place despite the lack of sponsors, said a good portion of the funds is spent on safety.

Donations can be made through the group’s website.

This year's parade route starts on North Harbor Drive one block south of Grape Street.

The theme of the parade will be A Tribute to the Guardians of Freedom.

According to Harkin, the 2016 parade will feature the largest number of military participants in a San Diego procession since 1991.
