Students Create New Trail Along SD River

A day of hard labor committed to help beautify San Diego River

More than 300 students from the New School of Architecture and Design (NSAD) created a new hiking trail on the Ocean Beach Bike Path and cleared the San Diego River Park of overgrown weeds.

The school partnered with the San Diego River Park Foundation in an effort to preserve the river’s natural and cultural resources.

The river, located behind Qualcomm stadium, is often the target of illegal dumping, and trash tends to surface during the rainy season.

They dedicated their first annual Day of Service to the preservation of the San Diego River.

“The river is a treasure here and is very important part of our ecosystem,” says the NSAD President Steve Altman. “That’s part of what we want our students to learn about how every part of our ecosystem contributes to the others.”

Sustainability is one of the foundation pillars at the NSAD. It hopes to build a more sustainable future by engaging students in community service.

The trail is located near the Cottonwood Grove in the Mission Valley Preserve. Click here for a map to the trailhead.
