Residents, Firefighters Injured in La Mesa Fire

Two La Mesa residents were hospitalized and two firefighters were injured when fire tore through a La Mesa apartment complex Tuesday.

Rick Sitta with Heartland Fire said when units arrived at 10 p.m. the apartment on Baltimore Drive was in flames.

Sitta said it started in a first floor unit then spread upwards. A total of six units were affected on three floors.

One resident was taken to the hospital after her hands were burned and she suffered smoke inhalation.

Another was transported after she fell and hit her head.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries after a roof collapsed. They were being evaluated and treated at the scene.

Witness Raquel Sanchez, who lives three doors from where the fire originated said she heard an explosion, then saw a wall of flames. She had just finished her shift at Rady Children's Hospital.

The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.

No word on a cause.
