Man with Samurai Sword, Baseball Bat Barricaded Himself in Room, Prompting SWAT Response

A SWAT situation has ended in Escondido after police say a man with a baseball bat and samurai sword barricaded himself in a room.

The incident began at 9 a.m. Tuesday on the 800 block of West 11th Avenue and lasted nearly 6 hours, Escondido Police officials said. The suspect walked out of the house at 2:30 p.m.

The family initially called police, saying their 20-year-old son had assaulted his mother.

When police got to the scene, the rest of the family escaped the house, but the son had barricaded himself in his room. Escondido police say the man is armed with a baseball bat and samurai sword, and police belive he may also be under the influence of some substance.

A SWAT response was requested to assist with the situation.

"I'm a little worried about (this)," said a neighbor picking up his son from a nearby facility. However, he told NBC 7 he felt better with the heavy police presence working to remedy the situation.

Chopper 7 showed a police response spreading across several blocks in the area.

No further information was immediately available.
