Man Visiting Daughter Found Dead on Cliff

A man’s body has been found on a cliff in Torrey Pines and may have been there for several days.

The 62-year-old man, an avid hiker, was visiting his daughter from Maine, according to firefighters.

Investigators say he missed his flight back to Maine. The hotel he was staying in told police they hadn’t seen him for three days.

Police found a car near a glider port in Torrey Pines and then spotted the body. They lowered a paramedic down to the man, but he was already dead.

The Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death, but firefighters say it appears the 62-year-old fell.

”We come here all the time for cliff rescues,” Fire Chief David Pilkerton said. “My guess is that he probably, unfortunately, fell off the cliffs here and landed half way down.”

Pilkerton is warning people to stay away from the cliffs.

“The signs are posted and due to the budget times that we have right now, there is no lifeguard protection during the day here at Torrey Pines, Blacks Beach area,” he said.

The unusually high surf is eye candy for visitors, but Pilkerton says there are safer places to see them.

“People should stay away from the cliffs and find an alternate route,” he said.
