Speed and wet roads could be to blame for a deadly rollover accident that killed a U.S. Marine on Gopher Canyon Road in Vista, according to CHP.

The crash happened at about 5 a.m. Tuesday on Gopher Canyon Road near Vista Village Drive, according to CHP.

The 25-year-old Marine was driving his 1998 Chevy Camaro eastbound Gopher Canyon Rd west of Dentro De Lomas Rd at a high rate of speed, according to CHP.

“The driver lost control of the vehicle after leaving a curve in the roadway,” said Officer Chris Parent.

The Camaro span across the road, plunged off the roadway and then slammed into a tree, Parent said.

The driver died at the scene.

“DUI is not suspected at this time,” said Parent.

A Sig Alert was issued and westbound lanes of Gopher Canyon Road were shut down.
