Most of the Chargers were back on the practice field for the start of mini camp. But linebacker Shawne Merriman spent most of his day on a side field, as he continues his rehab from knee surgery he had last season.
"I feel good," said Merriman. "I could play in a game right now, but would I be able to be as effective as I want, not right now."
Cameras focused on Merriman as the morning practice got started. Head Coach Norv Turner has been monitoring his progress.
"He's running well, but not ready yet to be back in the mix," said Turner. "We've got three months until the start of training camp, and six weeks after that until the start of the season. Having him ready for the opener in Oakland is all we want."
Merriman said he was surprised the Chargers used their first round draft choice to take another pass rushing outside linebacker in Larry English. His locker is right next to English, so the two will have plenty of time to talk.
"I talked to him a little," said English. "All the linebackers have been helpful in getting me used to things."
The Chargers will have two more practices on Saturday, and one Sunday before mini camp is complete.
