Toreros Roll in Season Opener

USD blows out Western New Mexico at home

Each of the last two years the USD football team won a playoff game. They are the only Pioneer League program that’s ever won a game in the Football Championship Subdivision post-season.
That is probably not going to change any time soon, mostly because the Toreros aren’t going to lose many games. They’ve won 21 straight games in PFL play but they don’t save their beat downs for conference opponents.
USD looks like it has another solid squad after a season-opening 38-9 blowout of Western New Mexico on Saturday at Torero Stadium.
The Toreros scored touchdowns on their first four offensive possessions to build a 28-0 lead. Quarterback Anthony Lawrence completed 25 of 36 passes for three touchdowns and one pick. His most effective target was wide receiver Michael Bandy, who made eight grabs for 111 yards and two scores.
San Diego’s defense forced three turnovers and should be fresh for next week after only being on the field for 22:28.
They’re going to need to be good because the next two games are serious challenges. Next week the Toreros head to U.C. Davis, who opened the season by beating San Jose State from the Mountain West Conference. The week after that they go across the country to Boston to face Harvard.
