Tiger Woods Returns to San Diego

World's most recognizable golfer to make 2017 debut at Torrey Pines

Tiger Woods loves playing at Torrey Pines. He has won there eight times as a professional, including his last major championship at the 2008 U.S. Open. He loves the tracks on the San Diego coast.

Woods has battled injury problems and his 2017 PGA Tour season was in doubt but the allure of playing in La Jolla was too much to pass up.

On Wednesday Tiger Woods officially committed to make his 2017 debut at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. The tournament starts on Thursday, January 26. Woods is not the same dominant force he once was but is still the biggest draw in golf. Having him in the field grows galleries by the hundreds.

“We’re thrilled our fans will have the opportunity to see Tiger in addition to what is already a very strong field for the Farmers Insurance Open,” said Century Club CEO Peter Ripa in a statement. “He has experienced tremendous success at Torrey Pines and in our tournament, and we couldn’t think of a better place for him to start the year. Tiger’s presence will add to a deep and talented field that includes many of the top stars in the game as well as some exciting up-and-coming players.”

Woods won the Farmers Insurance Open in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2013. As usual he will be joined in the field by several players with ties to San Diego.

Phil Mickelson, a three-time winner of the event, is in the field again, along with Poway High School alum and four-time PGA TOUR winner Charley Hoffman, San Diego State University alums J.J. Spaun and Xander Schauffele, and Torrey Pines High School graduates Michael Kim and Pat Perez.
