Ethiopians Finish 1, 2 in Carlsbad 5000

After battling through heat and wind, Olympic distance runner Abreham Cherkos and fellow Ethiopian Bekana Daba staged a sprint to the finish in Sunday's men's invitational race at the Carlsbad 5000.

Both runners were timed in 13 minutes, 19 seconds, according to our media partner the North County Times.

Defending champion Maregu Zewdie was third in 13:24, and Ali Abdosh was one second behind in fourth.

In the women's race, Ethiopia also had a champion.  Aheza Kiros edged out U.S.  Olympic 1,500-meter racer Shannon Rowbury by two seconds.

The men's and women's invitational champions each received $5,000.

Anthony Famiglietti took sixth as the top American finisher. His time of 13:28 was just four seconds off the American road-race record of 13:24 set in Carlsbad by Marc Davis in 1996.

American Scott Bauhs came in 10th in 13:56.

The 24th annual Carlsbad 5000 attracted 7,812 starters for nine races, and 7,643 crossed the finish line.
