Aztecs Lose To LSU In College World Series Regional Opener

SDSU is now relegated to the elimination game Saturday

San Diego State proved it could play with an SEC powerhouse but ultimately fell 6-4 to LSU in Friday’s first matchup in the Corvallis Regional.

Aztecs starting pitcher Jorge Fernandez allowed three runs in the first three innings.

But the Aztecs rallied in the top of the third and got back into the game.

Julian Escobedo scored on a wild pitch and then Jacob Maekawa delivered a clutch two-run double down the third-base line to tie the game at 3-3.

However, a trio of RBI singles by the Tigers in the bottom half of the sixth inning pushed LSU back in front 6-3 and wound up being the difference.

Escobedo led the SDSU offense with two hits, including an RBI single in the eighth that trimmed the deficit to 6-4.

San Diego State will face the loser of the Oregon State-Northwestern State matchup in an elimination game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

It’s double elimination so the Aztecs must win on Saturday to stay in the tourney.
