Aztecs Headed to NCAA Tourney

The SDSU Aztecs made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament in 2011

San Diego State had to wait until the last pairing was announced, to find out who they face in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Of the 68 teams that made the tournament, the Aztecs were the 67th team announced.

San Diego was definitely playing the waiting game.

Then there was a big roar when San Diego Stateโ€™s name popped up followed by a second roar when their opponent was announced.

The team got the news they're going to Columbus, Ohio to face North Carolina State on Friday in the Midwest region.

"I got nervous when we were last line and still hadn't popped up I was like did they forget about us," Coach Steve Fisher said.

Coach Fisher has no gripes with their seeding or region of play.

"Doesnโ€™t matter who you play what seed you are we are privileged to be 6th seed we'd been satisfied to be playing,โ€ the coach said.

โ€œWe're thrilled to be in tournament."

North Carolina state has some serious hoops history and hails from the powerful ACC.. but recently San Diego State has had the better basketball resume.

This is the Aztecs 3rd straight NCAA tournament appearance and playing in the big dance is something this program doesn't take lightly.

"Itโ€™s one of those thingsโ€ฆ Holy Grail of basketball,โ€ said forward Tim Shelton. โ€œItโ€™s an honor you always want to be a part of it.

โ€œItโ€™s one of those things we appreciate and we're going to work had to stay in it," he said.
