Aztecs Beat Broncos in MWC Matchup

SDSU gets big win in fight for conference tournament seeding

Winning four games in four days in an NCAA conference basketball tournament is nearly impossible. In the Mountain West Conference any team outside the top five in the standings has to do just that to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Aztecs took a step towards avoiding that situation with a 71-65 win over Boise St. on Saturday evening at Viejas Arena.

Devin Watson scored 19 points and needed just eight shots to do it to lead San Diego State. Watson also had six rebounds and a pair of assists. Fellow guard Matt Mitchell added 13 points.

SDSU is 8-4 in the MWC, sitting in 4th place and a half game in front of UNLV. The loss dropped the Broncos, who are currently in 6th place, to 6-7 to create some breathing room between the Aztecs and that 4th game come conference tournament time.

That's important because once again this year the only way for San Diego State to earn a spot in the 68-team field known as March Madness is for them to win the MWC Tourney.

Their next game is going to be their biggest challenge since facing Duke in November. On Wednesday night 7th-ranked Nevada comes to town. The Wolfpack have lost just once all year.
