Chula Vista's New Top Cop is Familiar Face

David Bejarano takes over from Rick Emerson

Former San Diego Police Chief David Bejarano will take over the same job in Chula Vista.

The City Council approved Bejarano as police chief at its meeting Tuesday night. He's expected to make a formal announcement Wednesday afternoon. He'll replace former Chief Rick Emerson, who retired in May.

Bejarano, who's 52, was San Diego's first Latino police chief. He served from 1999 to 2003 and later was a U.S. marshal for San Diego and Imperial counties. He's a longtime resident of Chula Vista, a San Diego suburb with about 228,000 residents. He is also a school-board trustee in the South Bay city.

Bejarano had been a candidate for San Diego County sheriff but has suspended that campaign. He said he will return any remaining contributions.
