It's likely that nobody will ever look as good in a white T-shirt and jeans as Jane Birkin—but we can try, can't we? We paired Isabel Marant's rolled-sleeve tee ($190 at LaGarconne) with subtly flared jeans from Michael Kors ($110 at Net-a-Porter) and a classic basket tote ($45 at J.Crew). Of course, Birkin's preferred footwear—simple nude ballet flats ($16.80 at Forever21)—look terrific with just about anything.

Birkin made stripey tees a fashion essential, so we tried a classic navy sailor shirt by St. James ($90 at J.Crew) with Miu Miu's smart cropped trousers ($485 at Net-a-Porter). A pair of patent grey lace-ups from Dieppa Restrepo ($239 at LaGarconne) feel comfy and sophisticated, while Intiq's woven satchel ($295 at J.Crew) adds funky boho charm.

Birkin was famous for her ultra-casual ensembles, but we put a dressy spin on white cotton drawstring trousers ($64 at Topshop) by pairing them with a washed silk Equipment shirt ($210 at Net-a-Porter) and Raquel Allegra's draped black blazer ($803 at LaGarconne). To anchor the look and keep it practical, we added black suede flats from Topshop ($56 at Topshop).

Stella McCartney's one-sleeved white lace dress ($4,075 at Net-a-Porter) channels Jane Birkin's signature "going-out" look in the '60s and '70s (during which time the actress was known for her super-short minis and scandalous sheer fabrics). We paired the dress with a Me&Ro charm necklace ($1,130 at Barneys New York) and scalloped coral flats by Chloe ($459 at MyTheresa).

There may be no better homage to Birkin's understated sense of style than the perfect LBD, and this season the Row's woven wool dress takes the cake ($795 at Net-a-Porter). For a nod to the swinging '60s, we styled the look with a floral-print scarf by Marc Jacobs ($346 at MyTheresa), a shimmery charm necklace ($6.80 at Forever21) and, of course, shiny ballerina flats in warm nude ($32 at Topshop).
