Intense Fire Burns Homes in Pico-Union District

Several people had to climb out of windows to escape an intense fire that burned homes west of downtown Los Angeles Wednesday, fire officials said.

The fire broke out in a three-story home at 4:48 p.m. in the 1240 block of S. Bonnie Brae St. in the Pico-Union District, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The fire had spread to two neighboring homes.

When firefighters arrived, people were climbing out of windows to escape. No one was hurt, but a dog died in the fire.

More than 140 firefighters worked to put out hot spots nearly two hours into the blaze.

At least 41 people were displaced by the blaze and living in temporary shelters.

Two dogs were rescued and reunited with their owners.
