Nearly 200 Lakeside-area homes and businesses were without working water overnight after a water main break Thursday night that caused a sinkhole to form.
Officials said a 16-inch diameter pipe burst around 7 p.m. along Cordial Road in the unincorporated area of El Cajon near Lakeside. The force of the break sent mud and debris spewing from the ground and caused the roadway to buckle.
About 180 homes were affected on Hawick Terrace, Hawick Drive, Marbrook Way, Braeswood Terrace, Stoneybrook Lane, East County Drive, Brown Croft Way, Heath Cliff Court, Piping Rock Lane, Briar Glen Court, Camino Canada, and Los Coches Road, according to the Padre Dam Municipal Water District.
Water was restored by 7:30 a.m. but residents were ordered to boil their water until the water district can ensure the water was not tainted with debris or other contaminants.
"Failure to follow this advisory could result in stomach or intestinal illness," the water district said in an alert to residents in the area. It could take up to 72 hours for normal water service to be restored.
When NBC 7 crews arrived on scene Thursday night, a massive sinkhole had formed in the neighborhood on Cordial Road. The Lakeside Fire Department was able to shut off the water and begin working on repairs, which stretched through the night.
The water district said crews were installing a temporary pipe and pump that would allow water to be restored for dozens of customers in the area were without service for nearly 12 hours.
Once the service was restored, the boil advisory was issued. It could take up to 72 hours for normal water function to resume.
The cause of the water main break was not yet known. The broken pipe will be sent to a third party to analyze what went wrong.
The San Diego Sheriff’s Department, the California Highway Patrol, the Lakeside Fire Department and the Padre Dam Municipal Water District all responded to the incident.
