Vigil Held for Slain Mechanic

Auto shop owner fatally shot at business

Dozens of people gathered Saturday afternoon at a vigil for a Rancho San Diego mechanic who was fatally shot Tuesday morning at his Point Loma auto body shop.

Jalal Abou, 63, died at about 7:25 a.m. from multiple gunshot wounds suffered at Joe’s Auto Repair at 1930 Rosecrans St.

The vigil began at the same location at 1 p.m. and was set to continue to 7 p.m. with its candlelight portion beginning in the final hour.

Abou, who is originally from Baghdad, was married and had a son and two daughters, one of whom is to be married later this year.

"He was very good person," said Raad Hannosh, Abou's nephew, hours after the killing. "He should not have (had) enemies ... I don't know what happened. I have no idea."

Homicide detectives are still searching for a male suspect described as having short-cropped hair and driving a dark-colored sedan.

Abou's family is scheduled to hold an 8 p.m. wake Monday and 10 a.m. funeral Tuesday, both at the St Peter Chaldean Catholic Church at 1627 Jamacha Way in El Cajon.
