The Toreros needed one rebound to beat Pepperdine on Saturday afternoon. They had two chances to get that one rebound. It didnβt happen.
USD lost to the Waves 70-67 in a game they led by three points with 19 seconds remaining. Senior guard Olin Carter III knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Toreros a 67-64 lead. Then things just kept going wrong.
Isaiah Wright fouled Colbey Ross on a 3-point shot. Ross only made the first free throw β¦ but his last miss was corralled by Jadeβ Smith, who was fouled by Finn Sullivan. Smith missed the second free throw β¦ but he rebounded his own miss and passed to Kessler Edwards who hit a short bank shot to put Pepperdine up 68-67.
USD had two seconds left, plenty long enough to get a shot off, but Tyler Williams turned it over and Ross made a pair of free throws with one second left.
The Toreros fall to 16-9 overall and 5-5 in the West Coast Conference. They have a busy week ahead of them. On Thursday USD hosts BYU and then welcomes 4th-ranked Gonzaga to Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday night.
