Longtime San Diego sports broadcaster Ted Leitner announced Friday he is cancer free, and is crediting the well wishes from Padres and Aztecs fans for his good health.
Leitner tweeted on May 29 that he would take an indefinite leave from Padres play-by-play duties as he battles cancer. He tweeted again on Friday explaining he had "golf ball size" removed.
A post-removal biopsy confirmed it was benign.
Had “low grade cancer surgery” to remove golf ball size tumor that 4 surgeons said was 95% cancer probability. Removed it and sent to lab for biopsy-BENIGN! Cancer free now. How? I’ll always believe is was thoughts & prayers from #Padres fans & #Aztecs. All my love to all of you!— Ted Leitner (@TedLeitner) June 15, 2018
Leitner told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he hopes to be back in the booth, at least for home games, when the Oakland Athletics come to town next week.
Leitner is the radio play-by-play voice of the San Diego Padres and San Diego State Aztecs Football and men's Basketball. He's also called games for multiple NFL teams, including the Chargers when they played in San Diego.
