Police officers roped off a street in an Oceanside neighborhood Tuesday as they launched an investigation into the suspicious death of a young man found bloodied on a lawn.
The Oceanside Police Department (OPD) confirmed that officers with the Crimes of Violence Unit were called to the 2000 block of S. Tremont Street just after 8 a.m. after someone reported an injured man lying in the grass near homes.
OPD Officer Kathleen Vincent said that when officers arrived, they discovered the 18-year-old victim on the ground. He had blood on his face and had suffered abrasions to his arm. The young man was declared dead at the scene, police said.
He was later identified as 18-year-old Anthony Calvert.
Calvert's friends and family came throughout the day to put flowers at the place where his body was found.
“He had a humble heart. He just cared about a bunch of people. He was never so hateful," said Alexis Guerrero, a friend of Calvert's.
“He was an awesome kid. I just can’t believe that he’s not going to be around anymore. It’s just too sad," friend Tina Bitters said through tears.

At this point, the OPD said the victim’s death is considered suspicious, though his cause of death has not been determined just yet.
No further details were released, including the victim’s name. His loved ones, who stopped near the scene Tuesday, told NBC 7 the young man was a graduate of Oceanside High School.
As of 11:20 a.m., no arrests had been made in connection with this case.
Investigators believe the victim was hurt near a home a few blocks away from where his body was found. Police are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the property.
