Suspect Beats, Carjacks Sleeping Uber Driver: PD

The victim, sleeping in his car on Piper Ranch Road in Otay Mesa, said the suspect broke his car window and punched him during the carjacking

An Uber driver taking a nap in his car in Otay Mesa early Tuesday was attacked by a suspect who beat him with a flashlight and then stole his car, authorities said.

The incident happened around 6:20 a.m. near the Pilot Travel Center gas station in the 1400 block of Piper Ranch Road.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSO) said the 26-year-old Uber driver was in his Toyota Corolla when a suspect walked up to the car and broke the window with a flashlight.

The suspect then opened the door and began beating the victim with the flashlight. The victim got out of the car and the suspect jumped in and drove off.

The victim, who suffered minor injuries, called 911 for help. About two hours later, officers with the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) located the victim’s stolen car near Avenida de la Fuente and Airway Road.

The suspect, however, was nowhere to be found.

He’s described as a man between 35 and 40 years old, 5-foot-10, and around 150 pounds. He had short, black hair and wore a black hoodie and blue jeans during the carjacking.

No other information was immediately released. No one else was hurt.
