Snow closes schools as storm brings rain, winter weather to San Diego

An afternoon thunderstorm and scattered showers are possible on Friday due to a storm that has brought snow to the San Diego County mountains, causing some school districts to cancel classes.

An area of low pressure to our east will continue pushing moisture into our area, so more rain and snow chances will be in the forecast Friday, NBC 7's Meteorologist Sheena Parveen said.

Students in San Diego County's mountain communities got a snow day on Friday, even though most of that snow had melted by the middle of the day β€” at least in Julian. NBC 7's Dana Williams reports on March 15, 2024.

On Thursday night, there were some lightning strikes reported in our region. The National Weather Service reported six lightning strikes.

Friday afternoon, the mountains will see some rain/snow showers, except snow levels will rise to around 5,500 feet. Areas like Mount Laguna may end up seeing 1 to 2 inches of snow, Parveen said.

Because of inclement weather and icy road conditions, schools in four San Diego County districts will be closed Friday and have a snow day, according to the San Diego County Office of Education.

The districts are:

  • Julian Union Elementary School District;
  • Julian Union High School District;
  • Spencer Valley School District and
  • Warner Unified School District.
Mount Laguna
Mount Laguna Lodge said they received an inch of snow on Thursday.

A flood advisory was issued Friday for San Diego's North County, including Oceanside, Vista, Bonsall and Fallbrook. The advisory has been extended until 7:15 p.m., according to the NWS.

There's a chance for showers overnight Friday β€” mainly over the mountains but possible for the inland valleys and coast, according to NBC 7 meteorologist Greg Bledsoe.

Temperatures will be a little bit cooler Friday night, with mountains below the freezing mark and even a few coastal areas dropping into the upper 40s.

Saturday is expected to be slightly warmer and drier everywhere west of the mountains, but there's still a chance for showers over the mountains and a slight chance some of those showers could drift into the inland valleys or desert areas.

"By Sunday, pretty much everywhere will be drier and warmer," Bledsoe said.

Next week, we start with a warming trend, then cool back down the second half of the week.

Friday night temperatures:

  • Coast: Mostly cloudy, 50
  • Valley: Mostly cloudy, 44

Saturday temperatures:
