Car's Collision with Garage Highlights Need for Signs: Homeowner

An out-of-control car’s collision with a National City garage has one resident demanding the authorities revisit the speed limit and add more street signs.

National City police officers are investigating the crash that occurred just before midnight along East Plaza Boulevard, east of Interstate 805.

Homeowner Anthony Reyes was watching television when he heard a big skid. When he walked outside, he saw a car totaled in front of his home and his garage door seriously damaged.

Reyes said he thinks drivers try to beat a traffic light at high speeds and end up losing control.

“These guys come out here in the middle of the night. They think it’s like a freaking freeway,” Reyes said. “This is not, this road is not made for that.”

“If you want to race – go on a racetrack and drive,” he said.

The family has lived in the home in the 1960s and there have been other accidents including a fatal crash several decades ago.

To add to his frustration, Reyes said he and his grandfather had just completed work on the home a few weeks ago.

Reyes said he believes more signage and supervision would help reduce the number of accidents along the stretch of road.

National City police say the cause of the accident is under investigation.
