PD: Landlord Shoots Tenant in Fight Over Utility Bills

The tenant went to confront the landlord over the loss of his electricity when he was shot, police said.

An East County man was shot in the leg by his landlord Thursday in a fight over utility bills, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO) confirmed.

Michael McGinley, 54, was arrested and booked on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon following the shooting around 10:20 p.m. on Valle De Paz Road in unincorporated El Cajon.

The victim was McGinley's tenant, Glenn Reese, who lived on the property but in a different home, deputies said.

Reese went to McGinley's home because he thought his electricity had been shut off because of a payment disagreement.

When Reese arrived, he told deputies McGinley pointed a 10mm gun at him and fired twice, deputies said.

Heartland Fire officials treated Reese for one gunshot wound to the upper leg near the thigh. The 49-year-old was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital.

The second bullet missed Reese, deputies said.
