Man Questioned, Released After Report of Mid-Flight Sexual Battery

A federal air marshal was involved in detaining the suspect aboard the flight, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

The San Diego Harbor Police Department and the FBI are investigating reports of a sexual battery aboard a flight that landed in San Diego.

The incident was reported on Sun Country Flight 403 headed from Minneapolis to San Diego.

The flight was scheduled to arrive at 4:21 p.m. However, law enforcement officials say the incident was reported to the airport control tower before 4 p.m. while the flight was mid-air.

A federal air marshal was involved in detaining the suspect aboard the flight, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Police resources were ready when the plane arrived at the gate, officials said.

The suspect, a 22-year-old male, was questioned and released by the FBI, authorities confirmed. No charges were filed as of Sunday evening.

The FBI said the investigation is ongoing.

FBI agents interviewed a female in her 20s. They said that the suspect and woman appear to not know each other.

The FBI reports that sexual assault onboard an aircraft usually means "unwanted touching" while a victim is asleep. Officials do have a website with information about sexual assault aboard an aircraft.

NBC 7 received comment from Sun Country Airlines saying:

"We are aware of an incident and have worked closely with local authorities. The investigation is now in the hands of local authorities, and any further questions regarding the nature of the incident can be directed to them."

The small airline is based in Minnesota and flies to the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
