Uber Driver Impersonator Tries to Break Into Woman's Home: Police

A man pretending to be an Uber driver and attempting to break into a South Bay woman's home was arrested Sunday, police said.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Gilbert Place, police said.

The man allegedly pulled up in his car as the woman was outside getting her newspaper and approached her, claiming to be an Uber driver coming to pick her up, according to the Chula Vista Police Department.

When the woman told him she didn't order an Uber, the man allegedly admitted he didn't work for the ride-sharing company, but that didn't stop him from trying to get into her home, police said.

The woman was able to get away, locked him out and called 911.

When police arrived, the man tried fighting them, forcing them to restrain the man in a body wrap.

Residents were shocked this happened in their neighborhood.

"I'm very sad and very surprised," Patricia Abady said. "This is a very nice neighborhood. We all take care of each other and it's very peaceful normally."
