Man's Death in Abandoned Warehouse Downtown Likely Accidental, SDPD Says

A man who may have been tagging an abandoned building in the East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego on Friday fell through the roof to his death on Friday, the San Diego Police Department said.

The man was found with his "head bashed in" in a building across from San Diego Police Headquarters on 15th Street and Broadway at about 8:10 a.m., which prompted the start of a homicide investigation.

But about an hour into the investigation, police said the death appeared to be accidental. A skylight directly above the man's body led police to believe he fell through the roof and 25 feet to the ground below.

Spray cans were found near the man's body.

At least three people were detained for questioning before officers discovered the skylight.

SDPD said 15th Street between Broadway and E Street was shut down for the investigation but reopened at about 9:30 a.m.
