A 23-year-old man shot and wounded in Linda Vista early Saturday morning has died, homicide detectives confirmed.

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) said a citizen called police just after 4 a.m. to report gunshots and a person that appeared to be down and hurt in the 2200 block of Comstock Street. When officers and medics arrived, they found Jordy Ramon Lopez, 23, suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Lopez was conscious and breathing, and though his injury was serious, police did not think it was life-threatening.

Lopez was taken to a local hospital. About four hours later, the shooting victim took a turn for the worse. SDPD Homicide Unit Lt. Manny Del Toro said Lopez died just before 8 a.m. in the hospital.

Now, his shooting is being investigated as a homicide.

Del Toro said detectives returned to the scene of the crime Saturday afternoon to collect more evidence. At this point, no arrests have been made. No further details of the shooting were immediately released.

The investigation is ongoing. Witnesses or anyone with information can call the SDPD Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers (888) 580-8477.
