Fire Engulfs Alpine Home

Cal Fire crews report belongings hampered the home's sprinkler system

Firefighters found a number of challenges when they responded to a devastating house fire in San Diego’s rural East County.

Cal Fire trucks drove along winding and at times dirt roads to reach the home on Big Cat Trail in Alpine.

Two women were sleeping inside the home when they were awakened by sprinklers around 7:10 a.m. Tuesday.

There were so many belongings inside the single-story home the sprinkler system couldn't keep up with the fire according to Cal Fire.

Crews decided to back out of the structure and perform “defensive operations” only according to officials. There was a lot of brush in the surrounding area and if the fire had spread, it could have become a devastating brush fire.

Two people living in the home got out just in time. No one was injured. However, a host of cats lived inside the home and firefighters say they’re not sure how many made it out alive.

The location of the fire is southeast of Loveland Reservoir and northeast of Skyline Truck Trail.

Arson investigators were on the way to the scene along with staff from the San Diego chapter of the American Red Cross.
