Field of Dreams Can Stay

The Poway City Council voted to let Jonathan Weisz keep his baseball field.

A man who built a baseball diamond in his Poway backyard hit one out of the park.

Jonathan Weisz built the field for his 13-year-old triplet sons in 2007. It has a small diamond and fence but no lights, scoreboard or dugout. But Weisz never got a building permit. Without it, city officials said the park might have to go.

However, about 20 people wrote letters of support and only two people spoke against it at a council meeting this week. The Poway City Council apparently listened and unanimously voted to let him keep a backyard baseball diamond.

The field is in a gated community open only to invited guests, and won't draw huge crowds, Weisz said. As he puts it: "This will not be 'Field of Dreams."'

Weisz says he's thrilled by the council's decision.
