Dramatic video shows a U.S. Coast Guard crew lowering a guardsman from a helicopter onto a cruise ship hundreds of miles off the San Diego coast to rescue a man suffering a medical emergency.
A San Diego Sector MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was dispatched at around 9:30 a.m. and around 200 miles offshore to rescue the man on board the Norwegian Star.
The Coast Guard says the ship was more than 300 miles off the coast when it made the emergency call, but changed its course and moved toward the shore as the helicopter was on its way.
The patient was loaded into a basket and hoisted back onto the helicopter. The helicopter landed at around 5 p.m. and emergency crews were waiting to take the man to the hospital.
The man was reported in stable condition at UCSD Medical Center.
