Firefighter Battling Store Fire Injured When Roof Collapses in Escondido

The Escondido firefighter was hurt on Aug. 28 while battling a fire at a dry cleaning shop on West Valley Parkway, where the flames collapsed part of a roof

An Escondido firefighter injured last week when part of a roof collapsed as crews battled a fire at a strip mall has been released from the hospital.

Officials told NBC 7 Tuesday the firefighter is doing better and is now recovering at home.

Officials with the Escondido Fire Department and Escondido Police Department were called to 945 West Valley Parkway at around 3:20 p.m. on Aug. 28 after a fire sparked at a small dry cleaning business at the end of a strip mall.

The flames were raging, and spreading to a neighboring business.

As crews tackled the blaze, part of the roof of the business collapsed on a firefighter, Escondido Fire Chief Rick Vogt said. The firefighter suffered non-life threatening injuries and was hospitalized.

One civilian suffered smoke inhalation injuries but refused medical treatment. No one else was hurt, officials said.

The owner of the dry cleaning business told NBC 7 she was stitching a garment when she heard a random zapping noise and looked up to see sparks falling from her ceiling.

Something caught fire and the flames spread quickly, the owner said.

As she tried to douse the flames with water, an employee of a gun store next door came in and helped her evacuate.

At the time, Vogt said it was too early to speculate what caused the fire, but said the dry cleaning business, which has been in the owner's possession for 25 years, was a total loss. The neighboring business suffered some roof damage, Vogt said.

Fireifighters removed some guns from the store next door as the fire tore through the dry cleaning shop.

Power to the rest of the strip mall was shut off while crews cleaned up the mess.

The address is associated with a shopping center and various businesses including a shoe store, nail salon, barber shop and weight loss clinic.

Vogt said the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District and the San Marcos Fire Department also aided in the firefight.
