Tar Balls Move Up the Coast

Tar balls that first turned up on Coronado Beach over the weekend have apparently made their way to La Jolla, according to the La Jolla Light.

An investigation is under way to find the source of tar balls that started showing up on Coronado Beach Saturday.

The tar balls ranged from the size of a quarter to about six inches across.

Lifeguards asked people to get out of the water Sunday afternoon, but it was unclear if tar posed any health threat.

A U.S. Coast Guard pollution investigation team is working to find the source of the tar.

“I saw one on the bottom of my daughter’s flip-flop sandals over the weekend,” San Diego Lifeguard Tom Thayer told the La Jolla Light. “We were on the beach (Boomers) west of Scripps Park. It was a good chunk of tar. We spent a long time scraping it off on the rocks.”

Tar balls on beaches sometimes come from natural sources, but they have also been linked to oil spills.

Even though the health threat seems to be minor, lifeguards are still telling all beach goers to avoid any contact with the tar balls.
