Westerfield Judge Dies

One of San Diego's most prominent jurists dies at 64.

Former San Diego Superior Court Judge William Mudd oversaw several major trials in San Diego County, including that of David Westerfield, who in 2002 was found guilty of murdering Danielle Van Dam.

Mudd retired in May 2005 after serving on the bench for 23 years, beginning on the municipal court. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Mudd was on the bench during more than 700 trials.

Mudd had been ill from cancer prior to his death. He was survived by a wife and two children.
