Vons Evacuated for “Cereal” Bomb Threat

A bomb threat that forced customers to evacuate an East County Vons was not a “serial” bomber but it was a “cereal” bomb threat, deputies said.

Customers and employees were told to leave as a precaution around 8:30 a.m. from the store at 9643 Mission Gorge Road after a suspicious device was found, Sgt. Russell Shimmin said.

The sheriff's bomb and arson team X-rayed a box of cereal that had a bomb threat note taped to it, Shimmin said.

After it didn't snap, crackle or pop, the box was determined to be empty, and business resumed at the store, according to the sergeant.
