Suspected DUI Driver Crashes at US-Mexico Border in San Ysidro After Chase

A suspected drunk driver leading police on a chase from Coronado to the U.S.-Mexico border crashed right before he was able to cross the San Ysidro Port of Entry, police said.

Officers with the San Diego Police Department attempted to pull over the driver for speeding in Coronado at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday but the driver took off.

The driver crossed the Coronado bridge and headed south on Interstate 5. At the last exit before the border, officers pulled off the chase.

Shortly after, officers were notified that the driver had crashed at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on the U.S. side.

The vehicle was flipped onto its side and under a pile of construction rubble.

The driver had major injuries and was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center to be treated.

Once released, he is expected to be booked into jail for suspicion of DUI and other charges in relation to the chase.
