Supermarkets Stock Up For Holiday Sales

Rush on picnic and barbecue items

Andrea Ivey has been cooking for two days to get ready for her 4th of July barbecue.

"I grew up going to picnics at the beach," Ivey said.

She was cooking for more than 20 relatives, including children and grandchildren in Mission Bay for the holiday.

"You can have sushi, you can have whatever you want but barbecue chicken and barbecue ribs and hot dogs make it the Fourth," she said.

Neil Cueva would agree. He is the Director of Supply Chains Support for Smart & Final.

"We have to prepare for these volumes that are going out to our stores that consumers want," he said.

And each holiday has it's own demands.

Smart & Final compared Fourth of July sales to a normal weekend and here's what they found:

  • Sales of Sweet White Corn go up by 800 percent
  • Seedless Watermelons up 500 percent
  • Potatoes up 450 percent
  • Spare ribs up 275 percent
  • Hot Dogs & Ground Beef up 200 percent
  • Mayonnaise up 200 percent

"Different holidays like Easter, you're not going to sell hot dogs. So every holiday has its different categories of what tends to sell," Cueva said.

As for Andrea Ivey, the food is a critical part of the holiday.

"I'm their best barbecuer, that's why I'm here."
