San Diego Restaurant Pioneer Dies


 A local restaurant pioneer has died. Vincenzo "Mimmo" Gaglio who opened "Mimmo's Italian Village" and "Grab & Go Subs" in Little Italy passed away December 13, 2008  from Cancer. 

His son says he died from complications of Lymphoma and Diabetes.

Mimmo immigrated from Tunisia in 1949, he made it to New York where he worked in a cheese factory in the Bronx

He moved to California in the 1960's with his brothers.  In 1968, he and his brother started the Italian Sausage Co. in San Diego's Little Italy.  The Italian Village started as a deli, bakery, and a flower shop in 1969, and  it later became the San Diego icon "Mimmo's Italian Village." 

Twenty years later, the family created the chain Grab&Go Subs with a total of 10 locations opening across San Diego.

Mimmo retired in 1995 and spent his final years in Alpine. 

He is survived by his wife Rosalia Gaglio, a sister, 6 sons, 7 daughters, 18 grand-children, and 7 great grand-children.

Funeral services will be held Saturday in Little Italy.
