A high profile murder case moves forward in downtown court Wednesday morning. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for four men accused in the stabbing death of a Mesa College student. One of the accused is the son of former assembly speaker Fabian Nunez.
The four men are accused of stabbing a 22-year-old college student to death near San Diego State University in October 2008. Esteban Nunez, the son of former California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, is one of the men accused of murder.
The men jumped a group of local college students in front of SDSU's Peterson Gym in the early morning hours of October 4, after they were turned away from a fraternity party, investigators said. Three of the victims were stabbed, Luis Santos died.
The men acted like gang members and even called themselves "the hazard crew", prosecutors said.
Esteban Nunez and the three other suspects pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges. Nunez's attorney said the defendants were acting in self-defense because one of them was stabbed. The prosecutor said the victims were unarmed and the suspects all carried knives.
Esteban Nunez, was freed on $1 million bail in December.
The four murder suspects are scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m.
