A teenage girl shot to death over the weekend while she was visiting friends has been identified by the San Diego police.
Hannah Podhorsky, 16, was killed early on Sunday at a home in the 700 block of 42nd Street in the Mountain View neighborhood. As many as three people may have been involved in the shooting, investigators said.
"The victim was visiting friends...," police Lt. Terry McManus said. "She was standing on the sidewalk in front of the residence with at least one other person when they were approached by the unknown suspects, who fired two to three rounds from a handgun in the direction of the victim and her friend."
The killing took place at about 2:30 a.m. Podhorsky was pronounced dead at the scene about a half-hour later.
Podhorsky was a resident of National City and a student at Mission Bay High School, according to investigators. The San Diego Unified School District has made extra counselors available at the high school.
People who knew Podhorsky said she was a happy, good-natured person. They also said she was a bit of a clown and got along well with everyone.
The victim's distraught father, George Podhorsky, said his daughter was not a gang member, but he did say her life "had gone astray" in the last three years.
Police, who are not sure if Podhorsky was the intended target, are still searching for a motive in the killing. Anyone with information about Podhorsky's death is being urged to call police at 619-531-2293 or CrimeStoppers at 888-580-8477.

An autopsy will be performed Monday afternoon to confirm the cause of Podhorsky's death.
