Paving Project to Close Mira Mesa Boulevard at I-805

A weekend-long paving project will shut down Mira Mesa Boulevard near Interstate 805, Caltrans officials announced Thursday.

According to Caltrans, eastbound and westbound Mira Mesa Boulevard will be closed under I-805 beginning Friday at 9 p.m.

During the closure, all motorists will be detoured to Sorrento Valley Road to cross under I-805.

Caltrans says westbound Mira Mesa Boulevard will re-open Sunday at 10 a.m., while eastbound Mira Mesa Boulevard will re-open Monday at 5 a.m.

At the same time, construction crews will also shut down the eastbound and westbound Mira Mesa Boulevard on-ramps to southbound I-805. The eastbound on-ramp will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, while the westbound on-ramp will shut down from 2 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday.

During the weekend road closures, motorists are encouraged to slow down and be on the lookout for construction crews and Caltrans vehicles displaying flashing amber lights.

According to Caltrans, all of this weekend work is part of the $74 million I-805 High Occupancy Vehicle/Carroll Canyon Road Extension Project.

The project will ultimately extend Carroll Canyon Road under I-805 and build a high occupancy vehicle lane (HOV) in each direction along I-805 from Interstate 5 to Carroll Canyon Road. A Direct Access Ramp (DAR) will also be added from the Carroll Canyon Road to the HOV lanes. Finally, a continuous 10-mile HOV lane in each direction from Mira Mesa Boulevard on I-805 to Manchester Avenue on I-5 will also be completed within the project.

The goal of the project, according to Caltrans, is to help relieve congestion in the area, which sees about 187,000 vehicles each day. The HOV lanes, DAR and Carroll Canyon Road Extension are designed to give motorists more options and carpoolers alternative access to the freeway.

The finished project is scheduled to open by the end of this year. For more information on this project and others, visit this website.
