Wreckage, Victim Found Hours After Crash

Officials say the crash happened Sunday morning - 29 hours before the victim was found

An Oceanside man killed in a traffic accident was discovered 29 hours after the crash despite the wreckage being located just a few feet from a busy highway.

Just before 8 a.m. Monday, California Highway Patrol officers found an overturned vehicle approximately 100 to 150 feet from the highway with the body of an adult male nearby.

The victim was identified as Joe Christopher Nevarez, 35, of Oceanside according to the county medical examiner who said the time of the accident was more than a day earlier - occuring just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

It appears Nevarez was ejected from the car in the crash officers said.

The crash along northbound Interstate 5 and Del Mar Heights Road was reported more than once according to the CHP but the exact timing of the accident was still unknown.

“We don’t know if this is related to previous reports so we came out here just to check out the area and we encountered the vehicle that had run off the road,” said Sgt. Armando Casas.

No other victims were located according to Casas.

As CHP officers attempt to piece together what happened, they’re asking that witnesses to the incident call their offices at 858-637-3800.
