Fun Times During Tough Times

Hundreds of North County residents make feeding the hungry a party, laughing with strangers and tapping their feet to recordings of rock 'n' roll oldies at makeshift food assembly lines, according to our media the North County Times.

"It's contagious," Tom Baumann of Poway told the paper, helping supervise one of dozens of tables set up at parking lots outside Rancho Bernardo High School.

The Poway-based nonprofit regularly enlists diverse groups to package meals for nearby families and faraway villages in Tanzania, Africa.

At the group's 15th food-packing event since 2007, volunteers of all ages cheered and traded hugs when they learned they had packaged 24,000 meals in the first hour.

Their goal was to package 300,000 meals by the end of the two-day packing party Sunday.
