Fallen Officer Remembered

In Point Loma Wednesday, friends and family will remember a San Diego police officer killed while serving in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Frederico Borjas, 33, who was known by friends and family as "Rico", was killed when he was on patrol as an army reservist in Afghanistan two weeks ago.

Borjas was a SWAT officer, a Marine, and had worked for the San Diego Police Department since 1999. He most recently worked as a patrol officer at the police department’s central division.

He was also a father and leaves behind an 11-year old daughter.

Borjas’ funeral will be at noon in Point Loma.  Immediately after, the funeral procession will make its way from the Rock Church down Rosecrans Street, Catalina Boulevard and will end at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

A public viewing was held at the Rock Church Tuesday night. At the viewing, Borjas's brother-in-law spoke about how proud the family is of what he had accomplished in his short lifetime.

After he heard of Borjas's death, San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne issued this statement. "Rico will always be a member of our family here at SDPD. We will miss him and we appreciate his service to the people of San Diego, as well as his sacrifice in service to this great country.”
