Chula Vista Animal Shelter is Sub Par: Report

An animal shelter in Chula Vista is being investigated after an unusually high number of animals were euthanized last year, according to a published report.

From January to August of 2008, almost 2,500 animals were euthanized at the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, the San Diego Union Tribune reported. This translates to a 45 percent increase since the same time period in 2007. The center is also accused of occasionally forgetting to feed animals, provide water, having poor staff training and dirty conditions.

Deputy City Manager Leah Browder told the Union Tribune that the unusually high number of cats was part of the reason for such an increase in euthanasia, although the total animal population only increased one percent.

The San Diego Humane Society will be look into the euthanasia process that the facility uses.
