Cashner, Padres Shut Down The Cubs

Strong start and home runs lead to 6-3 win in Mesa

Andrew Cashner became the first Padres pitcher to go three innings during Spring Training 2015. He set the bar awfully high.

Cashner did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out three Cubs to beat Chicago 6-3 on Monday afternoon in Mesa, AZ. He was seen leaving the game after talking to manager Bud Black and team trainers, sparking speculation on social media that Cashner had suffered an injury.

Black says Cashner's health is fine, he left for personal reasons and may have to go home to Texas to address them.

On offense, the Padres are showing the power people had hoped to see after a flurry of off-season moves. New 3rd baseman Will Middlebrooks hit a long 3-run home run, his first in a Padres uniform.

A couple of established Padres also had nice days at the plate. First baseman Yonder Alonso added a solo homer and second baseman Jedd Gyorko's bat showed signs of stirring with a pair of doubles.

The Padres return to Peoria for a Tuesday afternoon game against the Giants. Ian Kennedy will make his first Cactus League start of the year against Yusmeiro Petit.
