Man Attempts to Rob Store with Explosive: Police

An unknown suspect wielding some sort of alleged explosive device attempted to rob a store in the Carmel Mountain Ranch area Sunday, police confirmed.

The attempted robbery happened around 2:15 p.m. at the Zen Spa in the 11000 block of Carmel Mountain Road.

Police say an Asian or Hispanic man in his early 20s entered the spa, presented a demand note and told an employee he was armed. The employee refused to give the man cash, and he fled the scene on foot.

Officers surrounded the Highland Ranch Park area in search of the suspect following the robbery attempt.

A police helicopter also assisted in the search, but the man was not immediately located.

Parents at Highland Ranch Park were evacuated from the area and scrambled to get their kids into their cars as police secured the area and questioned nearby golfers and witnesses.

Police say the suspect is 5-foot-10 and about 150 pounds. He was wearing a purple shirt and black pants at the time of attempted robbery.

No one was injured.
