Animal Cruelty Charges Possible in Abandonment of Dog in a Box

The dog's condition was so critical, animal society officials are looking for the caretaker in order to file criminal charges

A dog left abandoned in a box in Escondido has died and now, the San Diego Humane Society is looking for the person responsible for the animal’s lack of care.

The 5-year-old miniature poodle mix was found May 19 in a box left on the front step of the humane society’s location in Escondido.

The dog was critically ill with a tumor that was open and infected, according to Danee Cook with the humane society.

“The dog was left in a box with two chicken wings,” Cook said, adding the dog’s health was “in horrific condition.”

More than two weeks after she was found, the dog died.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the dog’s caretaker. He or she may face felony charges of animal cruelty.

“It’s clear that she lacked medical care for quite a while and was suffering,” Cook said.
