629 ‘Distracted Drivers' Ticketed in 2 Days

The numbers are in from last week's zero tolerance campaign against cell phone violators.

From Tuesday to Thursday, San Diego law enforcement officers focused their efforts on drivers who were using a hand-held device.

Nearly 630 tickets were issued.

They were given to drivers who were talking or texting on their cell phones while driving.

The two day ticketing event was part of a larger 'hands free is ticket free' campaign. The goal is to educate drivers about the consequences of distracted driving behavior, which they say is as dangerous as driving under the influence.
